“Savonarola”

Description

Plaster bas-relief medallion depicting Gerolamo Savonarola (1452‒1498). The original of this piece has chipped edges and the interior white plaster is exposed. See the 2D image (linked to below). The defects are colored in on this 3D scan.

Savonarola was an Italian Dominican friar who was excommunicated, imprisoned, tortured, and then burned at the stake for exposing what in his sermons he publicly claimed was papal corruption. In her diary (1903‒1905), Elizabeth mentions two times having read biographies about the friar. See her diary entries for 6 and 19 August 1903. Read more.
